What is KERS regenerative braking?
Braking on most bikes is a wasteful process. If you're riding downhill and hit the brakes to slow down, all your kinetic energy is simply converted into heat and sound. Wouldn't it be great if you could recapture that energy?
The Zehus motor does just that: as soon as you start pedaling backward, the kinetic energy generated is converted into electrical energy and begins charging the battery. This process is called regenerative braking.
The battery charges most efficiently on terrain with a long braking distance, such as when descending a slope. The angle of the incline and the intensity of your pedaling also play an important role. On average, you can recover about 15–20% of the battery’s charge. This technology helps reduce costs by allowing the use of simple rim brakes on the bike and also extends the service life of the brake pads.
